Learning Environment

What Sets Humanex Academy Apart

Our approach at Humanex Academy is built on integration rather than compartmentalization.  We focus on:

  • Encouraging open communication that unites the academic and social-emotional aspects of learning.
  • Implementing innovative methods that address the holistic needs of each student.
  • Creating a responsive support system that adapts to the unique challenges of our community.

Our environment allows students to be themselves and to truly thrive within a school environment.  We build confidence, social skills, emotional strength, and intelligence in each student by focusing on building positive and trusting relationships between students and adults within our building.  This allows for corrective redirection and in-the-moment social coaching.

Our teachers meet students where they are academically and appropriately challenge each student at an individual level.  We endeavor to identify and enhance each student’s abilities, and because of our small class sizes, we are able to create a unique strength-based learning plan for each individual. Accommodations are built into lesson plans and promoting self-advocacy is a mainstay.

Our learning specialist plays a key role in bridging the gap between classroom instruction and social/emotional support while collaborating closely with teachers, students, and staff to create a seamless network of support for each student.

Looking Ahead to Fall 2025:  Our learning specialist will coordinate the Student Success Profiles.  This will be a dynamic, living document provided to students at the start of their educational journey at Humanex Academy.  These comprehensive profiles intend to capture each student’s strengths, accommodations, and visions through contributions from student, staff, and parents.  The Profile is meant to evolve alongside the student’s progress and will serve as a roadmap for continuous growth and success throughout a student’s time at Humanex.

Our students develop the confidence to determine what they need and how to reach it.  We teach the whole student by incorporating social-emotional skills daily and to give each student true attention and personal time.  Students engage in accessible and creative content that allows them to build successes and skills for the future.

Middle School:  The Emotional-Social Growth Years

So much brain development occurs during these pivotal years, and, we at Humanex, recognize that!  We keep the class size small; the average size class ratio is 5 students: 1 teacher.  Grades are weighted to reflect our prioritization of social-emotional growth.

During these Emotional-Social Growth Years, we maintain the following academic to social-emotional weighted grading scale.

6th-8th grades:  80% academic + 20% life and career skills

High School: College & Career Prep Years

We set the stage and prepare young minds for the next step beyond high school, regardless of their chosen path.  We strive to keep our classroom size small; the average class size is 8 students: 1 teacher.  What makes our high school classrooms uniquely different than a traditional high school setting is that you will find learning environments that vary widely and include self-directed projects, experiential learning, and mentorship programs with local businesses.

Our Junior & Senior Transition Program is individualized to each student.  We recognize that their pathway after graduation will be their own and unique to them.  Together, we explore and discuss a few of the following resources as possible next steps.  These options may include Inclusive Higher Education Programs, Community Colleges, Universities & Colleges with Built-In Support Programming, Trade Programs/Schools, Transition Programming, and Internships & jobs.

We offer a year-long Senior Seminar course to our graduating seniors.  The course goal is for each student to demonstrate readiness for graduation by showing proficiency in the following areas: Executive Functioning Skills, Future Pathway Exploration & Transition Planning, Community & Civic Service, Academic Progress Monitoring, and Self-Reflection and Advocacy.

During the College & Career Prep Years, we maintain the following academic to social-emotional weighted grading scale.

9-12th grades:  80% academic + 20% life and career skills
